# Labels and attributes

> Organize contacts with labels and custom attributes on the connected phone number.

Labels and attributes belong to the connected phone number. Use them to group contacts and to store extra fields, such as a plan name or a city.

## Labels

Open **Contacts**, then **Labels**.

* Create a label and assign it to contacts.
* Import or export the label list.
* Filter broadcasts and automation conditions by label.

A contact can have more than one label. Deleting a label removes it from contacts. It does not delete the contacts.

## Attributes

Open **Contacts**, then **Attributes**.

Attributes are the custom fields on a contact, separate from first name, last name, and phone number. Define the attribute once, then set a value on each contact.

You can import and export attribute definitions the same way as labels.

## Where they show up

* Broadcast contact selection can filter the audience with labels and attributes.
* Automations can check a label or an attribute, then set either one as a step.
* The Developer API lists and updates both catalogs with `GET /v1/labels` and `GET /v1/attributes`. Contact payloads reference those ids.
