# Contacts

> Add, import, export, and update the customers you message on WhatsApp.

Contacts are the people you message from the connected phone number. A contact is unique by phone number on that number's WhatsApp Business account.

Open **Contacts** in the dashboard.

## Add contacts

* Add a contact in the dashboard and include the country code in the phone number.
* Click **Import** to upload a file, map columns, and review the import report.
* Click **Export** to download the current list.

Imports skip or report rows that do not have a usable phone number. If a contact with the same number already exists, GreenTick keeps a single contact for that number.

## Use contacts

* **Broadcasts** can select saved contacts, filter them, import a file, or add numbers for that send. Contacts who opted out of broadcasts are not included.
* **Live Chat** opens the thread for a contact when they message you, or when you send them a template.
* Labels and custom attributes segment the list. See [Labels and attributes](https://docs.greentick.ai/contacts/labels-and-attributes.md).

## Phone numbers

Store numbers with the country code and no spaces or symbols if you are preparing a file, for example `919876543210`. GreenTick normalizes numbers to digits, including the country code, before it saves them.

> The same contact rules apply to the API. `POST /v1/contacts` creates contacts, and a duplicate phone number returns a conflict instead of a second record.
