# Templates

> Create WhatsApp templates in GreenTick and wait for Meta approval before you send them.

A template is a WhatsApp message Meta reviews before you can send it. Broadcasts, automations, and the API can only send templates that are approved.

Open **Templates** in the dashboard.

## Create a template

**1. Choose the category**

Use **Marketing** for promotions, **Utility** for account or order updates, or **Authentication** for one-time passwords. Meta reviews each category differently.

**2. Write the message**

Add the body, and a header, footer, or buttons when you need them. GreenTick templates use named variables, such as `customer_name`, not numbered placeholders.

**3. Add samples**

Fill sample values for every variable. Meta uses those samples during review.

**4. Submit**

Submit the template from the connected phone number. Status stays pending until Meta approves or rejects it. Only approved templates appear when you start a broadcast.

## What you can include

* Header text, or a header image, video, or document
* Body text with named variables
* Footer text on marketing and utility templates
* Buttons: quick reply, URL, phone number, or copy code

Header images can also be generated in GreenTick. The monthly allowance depends on your plan. Trial accounts get a small number of generations for the whole trial. A failed or blocked prompt does not use one.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Editing an approved template submits a new version to Meta. Do not send a template from a broadcast or the API until its status is approved.
